Isle of Wight Branch
Isle of Wight Branch was formed at 1930hrs on Tuesday 11th April 1950, a Branch meeting was held at the Eagle Hotel, High Street, Ryde, the object of which was to set up a Branch of the Royal Naval Old Comrades Club. 25 ex-naval men were present and the meeting was presided over by LtCdr Punting MBE RN (ret), the Area Vice Chairman and President of the Portsmouth RNOC. S/M B Rann had approached LtCdr Punting for assistance in forming a Branch on the Isle of Wight. After some discussion it was agreed to form a Branch and it was proposed and carried unanimously that S/M Rann be elected Chairman.
Following this S/M R W Taylor was elected Secretary and S/M A W Butler was elected Treasurer. A committee was also elected consisting of S/Ms H S Savage, J L Few and A Gregg. Vote of thanks was given to Mr.White, landlord of the Eagle Hotel, for allowing the meeting to be held in his establishment. A second meeting was called for the 25th May 1950. This was attended by 46 S/Ms, the evening's business was devoted to the setting up of a fully operational Branch, but HM King GeorgeVII had recently given Royal Ascent to the forming of the Royal Naval Association. This prompted another May meeting and so the inaugural meting of the Isle of Wight Branch Royal Naval Association was held on Tuesday 30th May 1950 at the London Hotel, High Street, Ryde. The meeting which was commissioning of the new Branch was attended by S/M A G Legg of the Battle, Sussex, Branch, a member of the Executive Council and Lt Cdr Punting. S/M Legg told those present that they had the distinction of being the first Branch to be formed under the new title.
The Branch Committee was to remain the same under the Chairmanship of S/M Rann. April and May of 1950 thus saw the formation of the last Branch of the RNOC and the first Branch of the Royal Naval Association here on the Isle of Wight, this, of course, make the Island Branch the oldest.
